I will not hesitate

Donald Trump has gotten the same number of Supreme Court picks in the past 18 months that Barack Obama did in eight years. He's redirecting the future course of our country, one Justice at a time.

Now, he's nominated conservative Brett Kavanaugh to fill Anthony Kennedy's seat.

Judge Kavanaugh and I have already had our legal disagreements. Here are two examples:

  • When a teenager detained by the federal government on immigration charges wanted to exercise her right to have an abortion, I filed a brief defending her right. The abortion would not have cost the government any money. Judge Kavanaugh disagreed that the teenager should be allowed to exercise her reproductive rights.

  • When conservative groups challenged the Affordable Care Act's contraceptive rule, I filed a brief defending the provision guaranteeing women the right to have their birth control covered by their insurance. Judge Kavanaugh wrote that Washington women should lose the right to have birth control covered by their insurance.

I am proud that we were successful in both of these arguments at the DC Circuit. Judge Kavanaugh's dissenting opinions did not gain the majority.

But with a conservative majority on the Supreme Court, these extreme views could become the law of the land.

Do you think five men should be able to overturn Roe v. Wade?

Some of our most fundamental rights and freedoms are at stake.

Regardless of who's on the Supreme Court, I'll always protect the rights of Washingtonians. I'll fight for reproductive rights, the civil rights of LGBTQ Washingtonians, our environment, and I will not hesitate to stand up to the powerful special interests trying to rig the system in their favor.
