Assault Weapons

In Florida, an AR-15 semi-automatic weapon is easier to buy than a handgun.

The same is true in Washington.

We must fix that.

I am the first statewide official to propose a ban on the sale of assault weapons. Unfortunately, lawmakers decided they were not going to act on that proposal this year.

Consequently, in January, I introduced common-sense legislation to address gun safety: Senate Bill 5444 requires a waiting period, enhanced background checks, and raises the eligibility age from 18 to 21 for assault weapon purchases.

Waiting periods and enhanced background checks performed by local law enforcement make sense.

That's why Washington already has enhanced background checks and a waiting period of up to 10 days for handgun purchases.

Now is the time to do the right thing to keep our communities and children safe.

PS I recently wrote an op-ed to The Seattle Times calling for Legislative action on Senate Bill 5444, which you can read here.
