We must ban the sale of assault weapons and high capacity magazines

Our country recently experienced two of the deadliest mass shootings in history.

Fifty-eight people died and 546 were injured in Las Vegas. And 26 churchgoers were killed and 20 more were injured at a Baptist Church in Texas. In both tragedies, the shooters used military-style assault weapons.

We can do something to protect the public – but it requires the political will to stand up to the gun lobby and powerful special interests.

Last year, I proposed a ban on the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. I will continue proposing this legislation until the Legislature acts.

Until that time, I will also fight for enhanced background checks to prevent these military-style weapons from getting into the wrong hands. Currently, our state requires a waiting period and enhanced background checks to purchase handguns, but not military-style assault weapons. That must change.

Too many lives are at stake to wait any longer.
